Six months of no coffee or alcohol – The Beginning

No coffee or alcohol, here I am making a start on my pledge.

Why are you doing it to yourself?

How hard can it be?

Are a couple of questions I expect to be asked when people find out I am going this, much the same way as when I became a vegetarian  (of course the reasoning is slightly different).

Now I have been having trouble sleeping for a while now, beyond the fact I am a mother of a 6 year old and have a greyhound who sometimes has difficulty going through the night. Getting to sleep is not normally a problem but getting back to sleep after I wake is. Let’s see if giving up coffee and alcohol make any difference.

The bonus being that it will help with weight-loss and save money. For once I am hoping I will lose the right pounds.

I have given up alcohol before for five an a half months.  I managed it with my holiday, birthday and Valentine’s day during it.

I had to read this as I’m a lifelong teetotaller who has never drunk coffee (or tea!) and also a vegetarian. Good luck with it, I hope it helps you. For me, it’s just normal life, but I understand it’s challenging for a lot of people. I’m afraid to say that I have no difficulty getting to sleep, but often wake between 4 and 5 and can’t back to sleep 🙁

Thank you. It’s nice to hear from someone who’s life doesn’t depend on these things. What made you decide to never bother trying any of them?
A month in I have to say I am not missing the alcohol and I have found other drinks that I enjoy more than coffee, at this rate 6 months may turn into longer. It’s helping me to make healthy choices all round and in the last month the weight has started to drop off too, bonus.
I wonder if there is something waking you or your body has just decided it has had enough sleep?

I hope you figure out what works for you! I drink chamomile tea before bed (no caffeine), but having to get up in an hour or two in order to pee is a pain.

A month in and I am not missing either of them, I think it was a bad habit I had gotten into. I can walk past those aisles now and not even be bothered. I am the same if I drink anything before bed, it’s a complete pain but at long as I can get straight back to sleep thats fine.

Now have your say
